Chapter Twelve
Tic-Tac-Toe
On the day it all started for Little Paul, He had only been with us just over a week. We were all playing tic-tac-toe in the yard. Paul wasn’t very good at it, in fact his co-ordination was crap. As a result Stanley ended up taking the micky out of him, calling him spazzy and a dumb git.
Paul was a feisty boy who didn’t like this and retaliated by chasing Stanley around the yard, and in his frustration spat at him. Then all hell broke out. They started fighting and things got very loud, so loud in fact they woke Roy up. Who was on nights that week, so he slept throughout the day.
We, the older kids knew it was more than our lives were worth to wake him up. Which is why whenever he was on nights at the weekends we were dumped outside from when we got up, to when he got up, irrespective of the weather conditions.
Roy came rushing outside effing and jeffing as usual and was definitely not happy demanding to know what was going on!
Once Stanley had told him that Little Paul had spat at him Roy went absolutely berserk. He grabbed hold of Little Paul and literally threw him through the back door shouting ‘The rest of you bastards get in the effing house’.
Normally at this point I would have been shit scared of the beating that was about to be bestowed upon us. On that day however after seeing little Paul fly through the air, and bounce off the side of the door frame as he went through it, I was more afraid for him. Roy had never done that to us. It was scary.
Once inside, again we were all ordered to assume the position of facing the wall with our pants down. Stanley, Ella and I all obliged. Paul on the other hand simply crossed his arms in defiance and said “No”.
That was it, Roy flew into a rage, and well and truly lost it. He punched Little Paul in the side of the head and Paul went down like a sack of spuds. He didn’t cry or show any emotion, he just sat there on the floor holding his face and glaring defiantly at Roy. God knows what was going through Little Paul’s mind. ‘Did he have a death wish’? I wondered.
Roy bellowed at him. ‘You fucking little bastard, how dare you say no to me, get the fuck out of my sight before I kill you, you little fucker’. I remember those words so vividly, as you read on you will understand why.
Little Paul just sat there still glaring at Roy, he never blinked an eye, he just said ‘No’ again. Roy laughed out loud, insanely almost ‘So you think you’re a big man hey? We’ll see boy’ said Roy before ordering the rest of us to bed. Needless to say, we didn’t hang around, nor did we get fed that day either.
Shortly after Stanley and I got into bed we heard the sounds coming from down stairs, sounds which I shall never forget.
